tOAM is a Detroit based project by singer songwriter Arianna Bardoni. Bardoni has been making and performing music as Tears of a Martian since 2018. The genre of the project remains an ever fluid mix as Bardoni tends to weave overtones of melancholia within elements of soul, pop, rock, indie and alternative, creating a genre all its own. With lyrics that are sarcastic yet brutally honest, the project’s title track ‘Tears of a Martian,’ discusses deep feelings of alienation accompanied by a melody both rough and playful as she states in her first lyric “I’m sorry for crying.”
After discovering bands like Hiatus Kaiyote and Jaala, inspiration grew and tOAM’s first single ‘With You,’ was released in March 2019, and their second, ‘The Right One,’ in August of the same year. Bardoni’s time spent playing live shows steeped in Detroit’s underground scenes helped cultivate the project’s soulful and heavy sound. This balance of beauty and brashness can be experienced throughout the band’s debut EP ‘Bloody Thumbs,’ released in April of 2022. “...a mix of the soulful and the gritty but also the space rock and the grunge and the catharsis and the cool.” -Jeff Milo // WDET - FM “...hard to pin down genre-wise but brings a refreshing mix of indie-rock, soul and R&B to the table. Bardoni’s honey-smooth vocals seem like the result of a musician who grew up listening to both Aaliyah and Hole – clear, soulful, and tinged with grit.” -Sara Barron // Audiofemme
